“blistered asphalt on dixie highway: Kentucky Basketball is Poetry in Motion”

by Ron Whitehead

Winner of the 2015 Open Chapbook Competition

Ron Whitehead’s book is an accessible, soulful, gritty handbook-exposé of hoops fanaticism. His poems capture the glory, humor, and pain that comes with being a fan. But as Whitehead roots for his team, the reader roots for the poet, the family man, the dreamer, the perpetual child who never loses hope, and always keeps his eye on the ball and his head in the game. It’s an important, fun read that brings you straight into the heart of basketball. The heart of Kentucky. The heart of America.
Frank Messina
Poet Laureate of the New York Mets

blistered asphalt on dixie highway

august 1966 i’m 15 we’re running full court
shirts and skins blistered asphalt on dixie highway

valley station louisville south end
high top converse black and white

so damn hot the court is sizzling
and so are we pass pass pass

then shoot don’t let the ball touch
the street 2 hours running non-stop

loser sits but we keep winning
then cannonball off the high dive

valley swimming pool oh the lovely ladies
crank up WAKY 79 rock n roll am radio

blistered asphalt on dixie highway
valley station louisville south end

From Ron Whitehead:

It may be high summer but it’s time to think about BASKETBALL!!

Hello Friends! The number of pre-order copies sold of my new book will determine the number of books printed. I invite you to pre-order my new book.

Starting in late October and all the way through basketball season I’ll be presenting readings here there and everywhere. When I see you at the reading I’ll gladly sign your copy of my new book.

Thank you!!

I’m excited to announce that my award winning new book

blistered asphalt on dixie highway:
Kentucky Basketball is Poetry in Motion

is now available for pre-order, https://finishinglinepress.com/produc…

The book is about my 65 years of experiences with basketball and, ultimately, life in all its manifest forms. My longtime friend New York Mets Poet Frank Messina suggested the idea for the book to me. There’s a chance Frank and I may be doing a sports reading in New York City bout World Series time.
